Knowledge About Solar Energy Watches You Need to Know

Solar energy watches, known for their low-carbon, eco-friendly, high precision, and durability, have become a popular choice in the modern watch market, which encourags increasingly solar power watch manufactures built. Unlike quartz watches, solar energy watches use a light-powered movement. The battery life of a solar power watch is much longer than that of a common quartz battery, significantly reducing environmental pollution from discarded batteries. Whether in daily life or special occasions, solar energy watches can meet everyday needs and showcase unique charm.

Principle of Solar Energy Watches

Light hits the transparent electrodes on the dial of the solar power watch, where solar chips convert the light into electrical energy. This energy is then transmitted to an integrated circuit to drive the rotor, gears, and hands, with any excess energy stored in a rechargeable titanium lithium-ion battery for later use.

When there's no light, the energy from the battery generates a pulse signal via the integrated circuit to a coil that produces magnetic force to drive the step motor, allowing the watch to function normally. A solar power watch placed under a light source for 3~4 hours can fully charge the movement, enabling it to run for 3~6 months even without light.

Categories of Solar Energy Watches

Solar energy watch can be classified into: basic light-powered watches, GPS kinetic watches, and radio-controlled light-powered watches.

  • Basic light-powered watches only possess the solar function.

  • Radio-controlled light-powered watches, in addition to the solar function, have radio-controlled time synchronization, though with significant limitations. In China, there’s only one signal tower in Shangqiu, Henan, making it difficult for remote areas to receive a signal. When receiving the watch, it needs to be pointed at nine o'clock towards Shangqiu, Henan, from an open location.

  • GPS watches are convenient for time synchronization, similar to mobile phones; as long as GPS signal reception is possible, they can automatically synchronize the time.

Advantages of Solar Energy Watches

A solar power watch is driven by solar energy and can automatically calibrate time by receiving standard radio wave signals. Its main advantages are as follows:

Eco-friendly and energy-saving

A solar power watch absorbs natural or artificial light as an energy source, converting it into electrical energy stored inside the watch. This design is both eco-friendly and energy-efficient, reducing dependency on batteries.

High precision

Solar energy watches can receive radio wave signals from multiple atomic clocks worldwide, automatically calibrating time. This results in very high time accuracy, usually with an error range of ±15 seconds per month.

Automatic time zone adjustment

Many solar energy watches feature world time functions, automatically adjusting to the selected time zone. This is very convenient for frequent travelers or those needing to monitor different time zones.

Strong durability

Due to the relatively simple internal structure of a solar power watch and the lack of battery replacements, its durability and reliability are very high. Generally, a solar power watch can have a lifespan of over ten years.

Diverse functions

Besides the basic timekeeping function, solar power watches have many other practical functions, such as alarms, countdown timers, and water resistance. Some advanced models also feature world time, calendars, and stop watches to meet different users' demands.
